Post surgical care in bariatric surgery provides a range of care that are standard in most bariatric centers. There are some general guidelines to consider:

  • General Care:

Include that of early ambulation, use of anticoagulants, chest physiotherapy and use of pneumatic compression of the lower limbs.
  • Diet:

Usually the diet is started on the first day after surgery unless there is a contraindication. It starts with small amounts of clear liquids such as water, tea and light wines and this serves to test the tolerance and total caloric intake ranges between 800-900 cal / day. Most times this type of diet is kept between three to four weeks before advancing to the next stage.
It then continues with mashed for a period of two weeks and then solid diet in proper proportions reaching FEW 1200 - 1500 calories / day.

  • Wounds:

Usually washing with soap and water twice a day during the first seven days.

  • Drainage:

In cases where the surgeon will consider using the drain, this should be kept in position between 5 to 7 days in most cases and should be withdrawn with the surgeon's orders only. It will monitor and record daily the amount of fluid drained and should pay special attention to the characteristics of fluid drained.

  • Medications:

Patients with chronic treatment should restart when you start mouth. The treating physician assessed the response of the disease with weight loss to reduce doses or to take any medications. It is recommended NOT STOP MEDICATIONS without prior authorization from your doctor.
