What is obesity?

Obesity is the accumulation of fat in different body tissues. May seriously compromise the patient increasing the risk of disease associated such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

Degrees of obesity

Internationally used BMI (Body Mass Index) to determine the degree of obesity, the index is calculated by dividing weight in kg or pounds by height squared in lmetros or feet.
There are various degrees of obesity as body mass index as follows:

  • Obesity grade I: BMI 30-35
  • Obesity grade II: BMI 33-35
  • Grade III Obesity: BMI 35-40
  • Obesity grade IV: BMI between 40 and over

Those with BMI over 40, suffer from extreme obesity or obesity bite, a term has been used to denote the severe degree of risk a person has to suffer concomitant diseases.

Associated medical disorders

We can identify a variety of disorders related to excessive weight, many of them can be solved or develop better once the person weight decreases. You can list the following:

  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Hypertension
  • Hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol)
  • Respiratory: sleep apnea
  • Endocrine Disorders
  • Joint aches
  • Hormonal disorders
  • Depression;
  • Poor self-esteem
  • Psychogenic disorders
  • Problems with employment and social acceptance.
